The European Artificial Intelligence Board (the 'Board') is established under Article 65 of the eu-ai-act-regulation-2024-1689 to advise and assist the Commission and Member States in facilitating consistent and effective application of the regulation.

Composition

The Board is composed of:

  • One representative per Member State (designated for 3-year renewable terms)
  • European Data Protection Supervisor (as observer)
  • AI Office (attending meetings without voting)

Key Tasks

Under Article 66, the Board:

  • Contributes to coordination among national competent authorities
  • Collects and shares technical and regulatory expertise
  • Provides advice on implementation, especially regarding general-purpose AI models
  • Contributes to harmonization of administrative practices
  • Issues recommendations and opinions on relevant matters
  • Supports AI literacy and public awareness
  • Facilitates development of common criteria and benchmarks
  • Cooperates with other EU institutions and bodies
  • Assists in international cooperation
  • Supports development of guidance documents

Sub-groups

The Board establishes two standing sub-groups:

  • Market surveillance authorities cooperation platform
  • Notifying authorities cooperation platform (acting as ADCO under Regulation (EU) 2019/1020)

The Board may establish additional standing or temporary sub-groups as needed.
