The AI Office is the European Commission's function for contributing to the implementation, monitoring and supervision of AI systems and general-purpose AI models, and AI governance. It was established by Commission Decision of 24 January 2024.
Under the eu-ai-act-regulation-2024-1689, the AI Office has exclusive powers to supervise and enforce obligations on providers of general-purpose-ai-models, including those with systemic-risk.

- Monitoring compliance with obligations for general-purpose AI models
- Conducting evaluations and investigations
- Requesting documentation and information from providers
- Imposing measures including mitigation requirements
- Supporting national competent authorities
- Facilitating codes of practice development
- Coordinating joint investigations
Powers
The AI Office has all the powers of a market surveillance authority under Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, including:
- Power to request documentation (Article 91)
- Power to conduct evaluations (Article 92)
- Power to request measures (Article 93)
- Access to models through APIs or technical means
- Authority to impose fines up to €15 million or 3% of global turnover
References in the regulation to the AI Office are construed as references to the Commission.
